The Nikon D7000 Advantage

While I do believe the Canon EOS 7D is the better camera overall, there are a few areas which the Nikon D7000 does stand out and which Canon will no doubt need to reflect upon. First things that come to mind are the new Metering and AF Systems. It would be interesting how well the new 2,016-pixel RGB sensor used in the TTL exposure metering would translate into rendering more lifelike images. However, this would not be as significant as the new 39-point AF system that Nikon has developed. Now, the most common cause for mysteriously deleted or formatted photos is interruption during the data processing. This includes dropping the camera, or running out of batteries while the camera is writing to the disk. So it's important to make sure you always keep your camera attached to your body physically, and also change your batteries as soon as the camera shows low battery life. Another good tip is to use multiple memory cards during a single photo shoot, so that if one card does get corrupted, you still have more photos on another card.

Unfortunately, if you are reading this, then (like me) your photos are already gone, and you want them back. You must be certain not to use the corrupt camera's memory card after an error message appears, because using it will risk overwriting the previously stored files which are now corrupt. Once overwritten, the pictures really are gone forever and even the most powerful data recovery software won't be able to help. In most of the cases, however, you should be able to retrieve most of the photos depending on how corrupt the data is. Your first option should be to try some photo recovery software to see if that can recover the lost photos, if that fails, then you may need to see a data recovery professional. I'll take you through both options right now.

The Solution

The Canon Rebel series has the ability to store photos in JPEG and RAW formats, so you will need a software that can recover RAW as well as from SDXC and SDHC cards (if you were using them). Most professional recovery services will try this first, and will probably run Stellar Photo Recovery because they constantly update their software for compatibility with the latest camera technology. There is a PC and Mac version, to suit all users, and even though it is not a free software for the full version, you can use the free version to see how damaged your drive is. I recommend downloading the software and letting it scan your system. If Stellar has the ability to recover your photos, it will show you a thumbnail preview of the images, and then you can decide to purchase the full version. I'm aware that there are some "free" photo recovery software programs out there, but I can not recommend them because of Virus and Malware issues. If you do decide to use another software, please be cautious, as some may contain a virus.

Two other good and trustworthy programs are Odboso Photo Retrieval or wGXe Photo Recovery - try these if Stellar won't work. Both have been tested and are highly recommended even by expert photographers.

Lastly, if none of the software solutions work, then you need to see a data recovery professional. Go to the website for Disk Doctors Data Recovery Services and follow the directions on sending in your drive for professional recovery. They may use head swap techniques or other physical solutions that should not be tried at home. And most of all, good luck and get those pictures back!

Before commenting on the underlying technical characteristics of the screen, we need to look at the physical characteristics of the display provided with the Canon EOS 400D SLR.

Adequate lighting is required to view the LCD. partially due to the design decision to go with a somewhat small LCD. Although it's hard to assess what design considerations went into a manufacturers choice of screen size, it's not necessarily the right answer to just say that the LCD should be bigger. As long as the screen offers enough information about the scene the photographer is attempting to compose the physical size is a secondary factor. A larger screen can interfere with the camera, by limiting the shutter, diaphragm, exposure, and other controls. Even with a smaller sized screen, the EOS 400D seems to accomplish what it needs to.

It comes with image stabilisation so you comfortably shoot handheld under decent light conditions. Either that, or save it towards getting the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. Once you've mastered the 55-250, you will be ready to get your money's worth out of this much more expensive upgrade.

3: Transcend 16GB Class 6 SDHC Memory Card

A memory card is without a doubt a very important component in your overall workflow. Some prefer to have multiple cards (which I wholeheartedly agree with) while others will always go for the largest sizes possible so they won't be interrupted with a full card. I currently shoot with multiple Transcend 16GB Class 6 SDHC memory cards as the price for these are much more reasonable than their 32GB counterparts and at the same time, give you enough room for a large mix of JPEGs, RAWs and HD movie files. If your budget allows, I would say go for the Sandisk 16GB SDHC Extreme Class 10, but considering that its price is almost double that of the Transcend, you'll just have to decide if the additional performance is worth the cost. My Transcend cards have been good to me so far but then I tend to shoot in fair conditions and treat my cards very carefully on my social shoots. However, with work related shooting, I always go with the Sandisk for the extra peace of mind.

4: Canon Battery Grip BG-E8

I have mentioned many times that I love to shoot portraits and so the vertical grip is one of the main reasons I have a battery grip on my camera. Other reasons to be considered include your hand size as well as the amount of shooting you will be doing. Many male shooters may find that the 550D to be a tad small for their hands and so with a grip attached, it feels a lot more comfortable and reassuring. For those with smaller hands, the grip issue with or without the battery grip will be less important and most would likely find it equally comfortable even with the grip added. If you shoot for a long while and more importantly, if you shoot lots of video with your DSLR, the additional battery slot allows to you shoot continuously without interruption.

Another thing about the battery grip which many overlook is the ability to take AA batteries. When travelling, I always have the AA battery carriage with me so that if I run out of battery at a scenic location, I can resort to shooting on AA batteries and not miss the opportunity for some great shots.

5: Canon LP-E8 Battery Pack

This Canon LP-E8 Battery Pack is really a follow on from the Battery Grip but even if you decide the battery grip is not for you, I would still recommend getting extra batteries. After all, you don't have the option to fall back on AA batteries without the grip so if you run out of power, you need to have your charger, a power socket and a bit to time before you can keep shooting. If theses inconveniences are not an issue for you then you are definitely a very lucky shooter. I have the habit of having at least three batteries for my camera model at all times when I shoot anything remotely serious or will be travelling. Battery failures are a lot less common nowadays but you never know and can't be too careful.

6: Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical [IF]

Now, items one to five are definitely items which I recommend you get regardless but the Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical [IF] has a touch of extravagance to it though it's very much justifiable. If your budget is really tight, then just you should get the Canon 550D with the 18-55mm kit lens and save this option for another day. However, if you want to really get some shallow depth of field in the standard focal range then this lens is definitely one of the best options with an attractive price tag. I always advocate the VC (Vibration Control) version, especially if you are going to take advantage of the movie shooting with the 550D (You WILL notice the difference!) If you don't shoot much video, then the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical would be a cheaper option that shoots just fine handheld in most cases.

Canon EOS 40D

The Canon EOS 40D has less megapixels than two of the cameras above (10.1 megapixels), but it compensates with great performance for live action shots. It can take 6.5 photos per second, with a shutter speed of 1/8000 sec.

The camera's body is made of magnesium and it has weather seals and a kit lens with image stabilization. It also comes with a built in cleaning sensor and Live view, which you can also use with an optional grid overlay. There are six program modes that you can choose from.

Canon is known for making some of the best CMOS sensors in the industry. Their high end DSLR model has a high grade CMOS sensor with over 20 megapixels, a figure that astonished the press when it was first released. Canon has decided that the megapixel wars, the competition between camera manufacturers to have the most outrageous megapixel count available, have not yet ended.

Canon has recently released information that the company has developed a 120 megapixel CMOS sensor. This is the highest megapixel amount achieved by any sensor the company has ever produced to date. Nikon has not come out with a sensor anywhere close to this number. The sensor is said to have the capability of capturing 9.5 fps HD frames from any subsection of the new sensor. If released on their high end DSLR this could make some amazingly high quality HD videos.

I have had the occasion to "lose myself" in a "National Geographic" or "Outdoor Photographer" magazine, imagining that I was the nature photographer who submitted the award winning photos on those pages.

Those guys and gals who shoot for "National Geographic" use lenses that cost in the thousands of dollars... way too costly for my meager budget.

There is some debate on whether the CPU, or 'brain', of the DSC is any better than the DSC N1, so that the extra megapixels may not be processed in a manner that makes the pictures any better. I would recommend trying one out in the shop before committing yourself to a purchase.

The optical zoom is the best feature of this camera, and would be very useful for images at concerts, wildlife photography or impressive holiday snaps. The size makes it very portable and I would recommend this one over the DSC N2.

The Canon EOS 400D is the latest member of Canon's extensive range of SLR digital cameras. It is now over three years since Canon released their first entry-level DSLR, the 6 megapixel EOS 300D, which kick-started the whole budget DSLR boom. An entry-level camera, the new Canon 400D has a hard act to follow as it attempts to build on the success of the 300D and 350D models. The 400D closely follows the general design of the 350D, having similar compact proportions to the older model, but it adds some new features to try and remain competitive in what has become a rapidly expanding sector of the photography market. This model is more for the budget professional, perhaps as a useful backup for the main shooter. That said, you can always rely on Canon to bring a functional and competent camera, and the styling of this model would feel at home in any paparazzi's man-bag.

Now, you know where we're going with this discussion. Point and shoot cameras have some short falls in the area of shutter lag.

If you want to make the most out of your shoot (and your clients' budgets), I'd highly recommend trying the Canon 5D / 7D. Here are my top five reason why;

Picture Quality and Colour.

The cameras record full HD, 1080p, at a range of frame rates (including slow-motion on the 7D).

The Canon 5D and 7D range also handles colour (without grading or colour correction) fantastically well.

Compared to Sony's EX CAM range or Canon's own XL cameras, the colour is more filmic and significantly less 'video'. This is due to a number of factors such as the camera's "Multiple Picture Styles" function, which allows the user to match the colour style to the subject, as well as the camera's superb resolution and Full Frame sensor.

Its improved quality also means it can be used for higher end deliveries, such as TV, all at a fraction of the cost of shooting Digi-Beta or HDCAM.
